The Target Bulldog is a revolver produced by Charter Arms factory in caliber .44 Special and .357 Magnum. Charter Arms started their career by producing robust no-frills revolvers for lawmen and others, and one of their notable innovations was the Charter Arms .44 Target Bulldog, a short-barreled but powerful pistol which revived the .44 Special cartridge. This is a highly serviceable round which has tended to be overlooked in recent years, being edged out by the .44 Magnum, and it had a good reputation for accuracy.

Design

In response to various inquiries and requests, the Charter Arms has now redesigned the Bulldog to take maximum advantage of the cartridge’s capabilities.

The Charter Arms Target Bulldog differs from the original Bulldog in having a one-inch longer barrel, complete with shroud for the ejector rod, and in having a fully adjustable rear sight. It is also slightly heavier, and the net result of the extra length and weight is a revolver that is rather more controllable than the original and which is sufficiently accurate to shoot two-inch groups at 25 yards all day. Lengthening the barrel has improved the velocity and consistency and has also cut down slightly on the muzzle blast, making the pistol more comfortable to shoot.

Caliber

For those who consider the .44 Special a little too much, the Target Bulldog revolver is also available in .357 Magnum caliber.

  1. I love your Firearms , they go way back . wondering if it is possible that you will manufacture a 3″ barrel bulldog the 2.5″ is ok but 4″ is to much 3″ is perfect for conceal carry , the .44 special is an awesome enough round. Also having rear adjustable sights is a plus , that is hard to get ,most revolvers now days do not furnish that it should be a standard with every revolver , having the ability to adjust up or down and sideways no matter what the barrel length is the simple fact is , it makes the revolver fully loaded and far more desirable instead of this one does this one does not, it makes it easier for all shooters to be able to shoot succesfully.

  2. Charter Arms has proven to a manufacturer of reliable firearms. This 4 inch .44 would be a good defensive firearm for an experienced shooter. It would carry comfortably in a good shoulder holster.

  3. BRING BACK THE 44 SPL.6″ ALOT OF SHOOTERS HAVE MISSED OUT TO HAVE ONE.I HAVE ONE AND LOVE IT YES IHAVE other MAGNUMS ,IHAVE A RED HAWK A. SBH. 10 .5 ” AND I SHOOT THE SPL INIT . LATELY I NOTICED ALLTHE AMMO COMPANIES HAVE TURNED TO PRODUCE HIGH TECH BULLETS AND FACTORY CARTRIDDGES FOR THE 44 SPL AND ARE USED FOR DEFENSE OF HOME AND STREET . I ALSO WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A 9 m/m 6″
I HAVE A .9.m/m 4.2 ” BOTH ARE GREAT AND POWERFUL WITH THE NEW POWERFUL SHELLS
KEEP IT UP CHARTER I WILL REMAIN A CUSTOMER OF YOUR REVOLVERS .

  4. The .44 special is a king of defensive cartridges, and mysteriously overlooked today.
But the Charter system is under built, not optimally reliable, and has rough actions.
The defensive handgun world desperately needs a well made carry .44 special. Ruger? SW? Where are you?

  5. abobo; Do you know the history of Charter Arms? If not then listen up. The original .44 Special Dogs were intentionally “under built”, BUT they ALL were exceptional 2nd guns for LEO’s. I know for I carried one that way for years. The company was sold and until the most recent ones, went through some poor quality control processes. All of those “other buyers” of C.A. went out of business or went broke and sold out too. The newest family seems to have it pretty much together, and they have VERY fast turn around time if you have any issues with ANY C.A., whether you bought it recently or from years ago. I love my S&W Model 69 2,75″ with 44 specials in it. It rides on my right hip in a J.I.T. Holster and is backed up by my Hammer spur-less C.A. 2.5″ Bulldog in my right front pocket holster! Always well dressed and well heeled with 10, if the first 5 aren’t plenty. BOOM! flop! is a great sight and sound.
