Croatia has officially completed the delivery of its full squadron of Rafale multirole fighter jets, marking a major milestone in the modernization of its air force. With the arrival of the twelfth aircraft, the Croatian Air Force now possesses a powerful and modern aerial capability that significantly enhances the country’s defense posture.
A Historic Modernization Move
The acquisition of the Rafale F3-R jets represents Croatia’s most ambitious military procurement project in recent history. In 2021, Croatia signed a deal with France to purchase 12 used Rafale fighter jets—10 single-seat and 2 twin-seat aircraft—for a contract value of €999 Croatia’s Biggest Military Upgrade million. Including VAT and estimated inflation-related costs, the total investment reaches approximately €1.15 billion.
Military analysts have praised the deal as cost-effective at an average cost of €45.5 million per jet, especially considering the Rafale’s combat versatility, modern avionics, and proven performance in NATO and global operations.
What’s Included in the Package?
Croatia’s investment goes beyond just aircraft. The contract also includes a comprehensive support and training package that ensures long-term operational readiness. Delivered alongside the jets are:
- A state-of-the-art flight simulator
- Ground support and testing equipment
- A supply of spare parts
- A full weapons package (air-to-air and air-to-ground)
- Training programs for both pilots and ground crew
This all-inclusive approach ensures the Croatian Air Force can maintain and operate the Rafales independently, while aligning its capabilities more closely with NATO standards.
Why the Rafale?
The Dassault Rafale F3-R is one of the most advanced multirole fighters on the global market. Known for its adaptability, the aircraft can perform a wide range of missions, including air superiority, deep strike, reconnaissance, and nuclear deterrence. It is equipped with cutting-edge radar systems, electronic warfare suites, and precision-guided munitions.
